For the first weekend of the 2007 DSWAC indoor dry stone walling
workshops, we began building a 25 foot section of wall using rounded
fieldstone, gathered from the surrounding property at Groundcovers
Unlimited (a prestigious garden and nursery greenhouse complex near
Bethany Ontario). Much of the first day the basics of building a dry
laid wall were covered, as students took down and then rebuilt the
existing dry stone wall constructed by last year's students in one of
the spacious green houses, owned and operated by Ted and Sandy
Spearing. On Saturday evening we all gathered back at the
Groundcovers Guest Building to 'socialize' and to watch (you guessed
it ) dry stone walling videos. The next day we completed the project,
capping the wall with a traditional vertical coping. Then using the
stones that were left over, we constructed a small gothic arch over
one portion of the wall. This irregular glacial granite stone is
very challenging to use, but the look of the final product makes it
all worth it.
